Outdoor birdbaths often are the central feature of an overall plan for a garden setting that includes natural nectar and food plants, shrubs, trees, and feeders. They often are placed where they may be viewed through the windows of a home, school, or office as a source of entertainment and satisfaction.

Birds often depend on the kindness of gardeners for clean drinking water and this bath may well attract an entire flock. Copper bird baths will take on a blue-green hue over time that can be very attractive to not only you, but also to the birds that visit. Birds are natural predators of pesky, damaging insects that inhabit your garden, and having an outdoor birdbath will attract more of these avian friends to help you deal with this problem. In fact, some species eat more than their weight of insects every day!

Birds will always be attracted to the sounds of splashing water. This is why other birds often join in when they hear a single bird enjoying your outdoor bird bath. One thing you have probably seen birds doing is leaf bathing. This is done by rubbing up against some wet foliage when no puddles of water seem to be available. But here is an idea to use that will not only attract birds but it will allow your outdoor birdbath to appear even more natural. If you place the bath under wet foliage, the water dripping off the leaves creates appealing ripples in the pool beneath which birds find very attractive.

Bird baths are fine -- but water fountains are preferable, as birds love the sound of water, and it encourages breeding. Alternatively, if you want a water source that requires more up front work but less daily upkeep, consider a pond as birds really like shallow water. 

Birds need reliable access to clean fresh water, a sometimes scarce resource in hot dry weather. Adding a water feature to your backyard bird habitat increases the number of birds that visit and also attracts species that don’t visit feeders. Birds and birdwatchers alike will enjoy it for seasons to come.
